There is a need for sustainability to maintain the ecological balance of nature and to avoid the disruption of other living organisms. So can we call our lifestyle a sustainable living? The answer is No and a little bit Yes.
In general, our current lifestyle is clearly unsustainable. We are driven by the benefits of industrialized society and tend to ignore the cry of our mother nature for help. The fire alarms are always ringing reminding us always about our continuous destructive acts towards the nature but we chose to neglect.
In Cebu, their is a dramatic increase of vehicles like cars, and trucks contributing to the "Global Warming". As I'v observed in the traffic heading school, most of the cars have single passenger each which proves that we are greatly influenced by the advantage of having luxurious cars. Instead of riding a car, we can always focus on improving the public transportation to be used by individuals to lessen the traffic and at the same time we can minimize the emission of carbon monoxide.
Another thing is the fast consumption of different kind of products even though these products are still functional or useful. For example, we tend to buy more shirts and shorts for the sake of fashion. We forget that as we buy more products, more wastes are produced. It is more sufficient if we buy clothes enough for our consumption and buy another if it is worn out. I guess we can still be fashionable and at the same time nature-friendly.
Essentially, sustainable living involves living as lightly on the Earth as possible. Someone who succeeds at living a sustainable lifestyle will use very few resources and will leave the environment as untouched as possible so that future generations will be able to enjoy the same high quality of life that people do today
So basically, we should just turn off the lights when not used,go biking rather than riding jeepneys; be a vegan and avoid having waste from left-overs. And let us always remember that we never have the rights to destroy the nature, we don't own it, the future generation does.
